An emotional documentary of the incredible story of Rudolf Bauer, a German-born pioneer of abstraction who lived out his final days in Deal, New Jersey. From the height of achievement to the depths of obscurity, from a Gestapo prison to the surreal surroundings of the Guggenheim Museum, the story of abstract artist Rudolf Bauer is one of Shakespearean proportion, yet Bauers name and art have largely been forgotten. This documentary revisits the life and art of one of the most important 20th century painters, from his artistic beginnings in Berlin before World War I to his pioneering contributions to abstract art and his patronage by copper magnate Solomon R. Guggenheim. Sixty years later the art of Rudolf Bauer is rediscovered.
